太和宫，全称“大岳太和宫”，俗称金顶。位于武当山最高峰——天柱峰的顶端。天柱峰海拔1613米，众峰拱拥、直插云霄，被誉为“一柱擎天”，是武当山的最高胜境。无论是信士香客，还是游人墨客，只有登上顶峰，走进太和宫，才是真正意义上的到了武当山。

　　距今600年前，明成祖朱棣下令敕建太和宫，历时4年，在险峻陡峭的峰顶建成了这雄伟瑰丽的建筑群，并嘉封武当山为“大岳太和山”。皇帝的嘉封使武当山的地位在中国一跃而成为五岳之首。明嘉靖年间，太和宫又进行了扩建，殿堂道房多达520间。

　　太和宫整体建筑依居天险、随山就势，充分利用其山形的自然起伏，达到了肃穆庄严、大气磅礴的艺术效果，有着神权至高无上的威严。
